Description The paper analyses the role of the Moscow Times (MT) in the securitization process of the Arctic topic in the period from 2007 to 2014. Analyzed articles were selected by the presence of the word Arctic in the title. The paper employs an analysis of the narrative as the main method of data evaluation. Four major narratives can be identified in the sample: 1.The narrative that can be called the “wealth of the Arctic”; 2. The narrative that can be called “cooperation necessary”; 3. The narrative “ecological threat for the Arctic” and finally 4. The narrative “we will defend Russian interests in the Arctic”. In a vast majority of the texts, the MT acts as the “boatman” and the newspaper does not take a direct part in the securitization process of the Arctic. The prevailing narrative in a majority of the texts is the “wealth of the Arctic” narrative; the second most frequent is the narrative “we will defend the Russian interests in the Arctic”. Texts dealing significantly with the narrative about the defence of Russian interests in the region are sometimes combined with the narrative of “cooperation necessary” and hence, in fact, are more likely to have a de-securitizing impact. On the whole, we can argue that the MT as a newspaper do not strive for the securitization of the Arctic issue and are more likely to report the attitudes of Russian officials.
