| Description | The band Spiritual kvintet covers various genres but the majority of their work consists of African-American spirituals. An important part in their translation into Czech was played by censorship, from which it was necessary to conceal religious motifs in particular to make it seem that they were not present in the song while they were easily decipherable for the audience. I will focus on how those motifs were concealed and how two-dimensionality of meaning was achieved. I will also consider to what extent the band succeeded in bypassing censorship. |
