Description The term intangible cultural heritage is a rather new phenomenon in social sciences and humanities. In the past twenty years, it has complemented the existing term cultural heritage which included primarily material historic monuments. This term generally relates to the legacy of traditional culture, its manifestations and transmission, as well as to its existence within the cultural memory. The principal content of this type of cultural heritage in the European environment is traditional folk culture, while its bearers are absolutely essential for its existence. The bearers are also the cornerstone of a mechanism which allows institutional environment to safeguard significant expressions of intangible culture of humanity. On selected examples from the Czech background we want to show, what the roles of folk tradition bearers in contemporary globalised world are and how they perceive their own position in the cultural-political field of which they are part.
