Description The main goal of the paper is to describe, explain and interpret the results of existing empirical research, which focuses on the roles of digital technologies in the lives of present-day (fifteen-year) students. The secondary goal of the paper is to present new research project called Digital technologies in everyday lives and learning of students (supported by GACR, project no. 17-06152S). The project focuses on digital technologies and the ways in which they are present in everyday lives and learning of students, across a variety of contexts and environments. Our research shows that school plays an important role in acquiring the skills to use ICT in different life situations. Also, the results suggest the importance of outside school environment, which plays a role not only in learning and acquiring skills and abilities to use ICT but also in their further development. The results of our research also emphasize the unused potential of ICT in education as well as the potential threats technologies are posing to students’ lives. However, we still do not know very much about "the life" and activities of students in a virtual environment.
