Description Our study represents the first comprehensive research focused to the source rock potential, kerogen type and thermal maturity of the Menilite Formation in the Silesian Unit of the Czech Republic. • TOC ranges from 0.72 to 13.48 %wt. with the average of 3.81 %wt.. The Chert Member samples show the highest average TOC of 5.13 %wt. among the members. • The free hydrocarbons content ranges from 0.03 to 0.99 mg HC/g rock, while the residual hydrocarbon potential ranges from 0.90 to 71.86 mg HC/g rock with the average of 18.26 mg HC/g rock. • The source rock potential of the studied Menilite Formation succession is mostly classified as “good” according to petroleum potential and even “very good” according to TOC. The Chert Member is predominantly evaluated as “very good” source rock according to both petroleum potential and TOC. • The predominant role of kerogen type II with admixtures of kerogen type I and III has been observed based on both the Rock-Eval data and the relationship of residual hydrocarbon potential (S2) versus TOC. The kerogen type II is dominant in samples of the Subchert, Dynów and Šitbořice members, while kerogen type I is mostly indicated within the Chert Member. • Thermal immaturity of organic matter was indicated by Rock-Eval S1 to S2 peaks ratios and confirmed by Rock-Eval Tmax.
