Description OBJECTIVE: This study aims to bring implications for the assessment of child welfare, which definition and measurement include some uncertainties in practice, even though child welfare has legislative support. In the text, I answer the question: “What implications for assessing child well-being bring social workers the use of the capability approach?” THEORY: When assessing child well-being, I draw on the capability of the approach formulated by Amartya Sen (1992, 1993, 1999) and later elaborated by Martha Nussbaum (1999, 2000, 2007). The presented text reflects the changing context of children’s well-being (Ben-Arieh, 2009) in a confrontation with a changing childhood (Corsaro, 2005; Aries, 1962), which are deeply involved in the debate on assessment of child well-being and its measurement. METHODS: This study is presented as a theoretical study. RESULTS: Based on new findings on children and childhood in the context of postmodern conditions and presented conceptual assumptions of the capability approach, it is clear that Nussbaum’s dimensional approach to capabilities, in particular, brings social workers new impetus for assessing the quality of life and the benefit of children.
