Description Recrystallisation most often caused by increasing age of chert, tectonic activity and pressure causes an increase in the crystallinity of quartz. It is possible to examine this phenomenon by powder X-ray diffractometry. By the means of this method, eleven samples of chert artifacts and raw materials of chert were studied in this thesis. In addition to crystallinity, the phase composition was studied. The thesis examines the possibility of application the X-ray diffractometry to determine the provenance of chert artifacts on the basis of their different crystallinity. The determination of crystallite size was performed using the Rietveld method, Scherrer equation and Williamson-Hall plots. Comparable results were gained. This approach appears to be successfully applicable for distinguishing between cherts with a large difference in their geological age.
