Description This conference paper deals with the non-traditional students and their motives for starting their univesity studies. The secondary data proceeded from the first part of a longitudinal online survey conducted at Masaryk University amongst first-year students in all the university bachelor´s and master´s degree programmes. Research instrument used in the original research was the questionnaire Academic Motivation Scale (AMS). The non-traditional students were determined as adult students 26 years of age or older who have previously undertaken a break in their educational trajectories. We found the hierarchy of non-traditional students´ motives for entering higher education divergent from the hierarchy found in the whole sample. The results of exploratory factor analysis showed as well a differentiation in the factor structure of non-traditional students´motives compared to the original structure of the AMS.
