Description Mutual trust in EU law is getting increasingly important as it has become one of the basic principles of the EU legal order. It determines the autonomy of EU law and is considered a cornerstone for effective cooperation within the EU. The paper aims to outline the concept of mutual trust in EU law and to assess the extent to which it can be a real basis for effective cooperation between the Member States. Accordingly, it considers the corresponding consequences and risks. All these aspects are demonstrated particularly in the context of the EU asylum system in which the principle of mutual trust is widely applied.
