Description The paper examined those phenomena of late antique aesthetics which seem to run parallel in different cultural spheres, namely literature, architecture, and the visual arts, thus speaking for – especially in the Latin West – a coherent cultural transformation triggered off by the onset of Christianity. The focus was especially on various manifestations of “cumulative aesthetics”, which are particularly symptomatic of the period and its new way of looking at things, such as cultural spoliation, poetics of the detail, and fragmentation patterns, as well as on the changing role of the recipients of art and the general movement towards an "open artifact".
