Description | This study reports the fabrication of an Al-Mg solid solution layer containing ~2 at.% Mg on pure Al substrate by a solid-state processing technique called friction stir selective alloying. Accordingly, a machined groove on the surface of Al substrate was filled by a bulk Mg block and friction stir processing was applied to form Al-Mg solid solution. The XRD/EDS results revealed formation of solid solution structure in the stirred zone of the alloyed sample. Furthermore, the hardness of the prepared Al-Mg solid solution (~55.8 HV) was more than twice greater than the hardness of the FSPed neat sample (~25.0 HV). |
