| Description | The article focuses on the graphic oeuvre of the Munich court painter and printmaker Bartholomaus Ignaz Weiss (c. 1740–1814), whose original etchings include a number of works whose style imitates that of the famous seventeenth and eighteenth-century masters, especially Rembrandt and his pupils or followers. The signatures of these masters later began to appear on Weiss's works, which were subsequently perceived as forgeries in the eyes of nineteenth-century collectors, and the reputation of this initially successful artist gradually began to decline. |
