| Description | The Japanese Zen master Dogen (1200-1253), founder of the Soto school, was not only a Buddhist thinker, teacher, and philosopher, but also writer and poet who left behind a rich legacy in the form of both Japanese waka and Chinese kanshi. Dogen, in keeping with the literary tradition of the Zen and akin to the teachers and patriarchs, composed poems through which he reflected on the lineage of his masters, Buddhist teachings, Zen practice, monastic life and training, or the surrounding world or the natural world and change of the seasons as he experienced them in the mountainous region of Echizen province. In this paper, I will present the context of Dogen's texts and collections and give examples of both Japanese and Chinese poems that can be seen as reflections of Dogen's life and universe. |
