Description The exhibition presents the results of interdisciplinary research into the history of charcoal burning and the environmental significance of charcoal kilns and charcoal hearths today as part of the TAČR éta TL02000160 project: The role of charcoal hearths in terms of cultural heritage and landscape protection. The exhibition consists of 12 posters, which in an engaging way present the circumstances giving rise of the need to study the effects of biochar on the quality of the forest environment (terra preta soil of Amazonia), project objectives and results of interdisciplinary research combining humanities (history, archeology) with natural and technical disciplines (soil properties, biodiversity of the herbaceous layer, biodiversity of microorganisms in the soil, reconstruction of the historical species composition of forests, usage of LiDAR scanning for charcoal hearths detection). Also explained the potential of biochar for carbon sequestration and other usage in today´s forestry and agriculture. The expositions and their content were modified with regard to their location, i.e. the Moravian Karst (House of Nature of the Moravian Karst) and Brdy, Křivoklátsko (Central Bohemian Museum in Roztoky u Prahy). The poster messages were complemented by two soil profiles - artificial soil monoliths for the comparison of natural soil (Cambisol) with the profile in the charcoal hearth with the remains of produced biochar, which clearly assessed the different morphological features of both soils.
