Description Over the centuries, Ravenna, Italy, has become a legendary city. It inspired Art Nouveau artists such as Gustav Klimt, but it has also managed to get under the skin of 21st century fashion designers. With a little exaggeration, one could say that it is one of the superstars of Italian culture. However, those who actually visit Ravenna are surprised to say the least. It is a picturesque but decidedly provincial town. Its fame is mainly due to its ancient past, woven into the simple brick buildings. To understand why these somewhat anonymous buildings have become the epicentre of a phenomenon that has spread across time and space, it is necessary to enter their interiors and encounter the glowing images found there. The mosaic decorations appear before one's eyes, almost taking on a life of their own in the flickering light of the lamps. The story behind them is the story of a world in which the image is intrinsically linked to ritual life. The result is a riveting story of human creativity, which will be at the heart of this lecture.
