Description The aim of this article is to analyze the work of Michel Foucault with stress on his theory of the birth of modem psychiatric knowledge. It connects Foucault´s early thinking, partially influenced by structuralism, with his later theory which tries to explain the relation of power and knowledge. This theory is analyzed in the context of social science discourse dealing with the role of psychiatry in modem society. The article shows parallels between Foucault´ s theory and the anti-psychiatric movement, and simultaneously shows basic differences that separate Foucault´ s conception of psychiatry (as a result of discursive practices) from anti- psychiatrist definition of modem psychiatric knowledge (as a tool of state oppression). Finally, it is suggested that so-called deconstructionist approaches to the role and the position of the modem psychology and psychiatry are influenced by Foucault´s archaeological method of analysis. It is method, which could contribute to the renewal of the interrupted dialog between Madness and Reason
