Description The Monte Carlo simulation of the motion of Ar+ ions in He buffer gas in a uniform electric field has been carried out. The total cross-section for elastic collisions between the Ar+ ion and the He atom was considered in the form sigma(T)(v) = C/v where v is the relative velocity of the Ar+ ion and the He atom. The constant C was adjusted in such a way that the calculated values of the drift velocity of the Ar+ ion agree with the corresponding experimentally measured values. The cross-section was also calculated from the potential between the Ar+ ion and the He atom by the Jeffreys-Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (JWKB) approximation in order to check the results from the Monte Carlo simulation.
