| Description | In this paper I deal with the question of what a good judge should be like from the perspective of virtue ethics. I believe a good judge should aspire to support the functionality of the justice. Judicial acts and speeches express the goodness of a judge. With the help of these I try to demonstrate that courage, self-restraint and ability to express oneself understandably and clearly are important judicial virtues. Each of them helps a judge and the justice itself look trustworthy. Public confidence in justice is essential to the functionality of the justice. That is why judges should aim for these character traits as soon as they prepare to take office and for the whole time they hold it. |
