Description The extensive public collections of art te can admire today in the exhibition spaces of galleries and museums were created mainly thanks to donations, purchases or loans of objects from private collectors. At the beginning of the 20th century in prosperous Brno, German-speaking wealthy industrialists and businessmen tried to satisfy their need to present their newly acquired status through systematic purchases of works of art. However, many of these objects were not only voluntarily donated to public institutions but also forcibly taken away. Some of the collections' fates awaited their rediscovery for more than a century, while others remain forgotten. Many private collections have met their demise, been sold off or seized, and over time have been transformed into new collections. Thus, no memory of their owners remains other than a faint memory. And it is through these stories that we can understand in retrospect not only contemporary art collecting but also the workings of society and ways of life.
