Description | There are many aspects to consider when translating the text of a play. Not only the text itself and its meaning, but also the dialogic nature of the text, interaction with other characters, contact with the stage, the audience, and the like. It should also be kept in mind that the words of the play's text have to be easily pronounced and heard. And the translation of the text of the play becomes even more complicated if the text itself also has special features. Exactly such problems arose when translating the play Several Conversations About (Christ) by the young author Tekle Kavtaradze. This play features many young people's characters who speak in colloquial, youth slang, e.g. shortens endings (of forms with long polysyllabic endings), uses specific lexis, etc. How did the translators manage to express these and other features in the Czech translation? What translation strategies did the translators of this play use in this regard? In common spoken Czech, the shortening of word endings is also typical, but to a lesser extent. The unification of endings (e.g. plural endings of adjectives and not only adjective plural instrumental case) and changes of sounds (ý/í – ej, í – i etc.) are more pronounced. The report will try to clarify how much the same language tools could be used, how much other solutions had to be sought, how the lack of suitable tools was compensated. |
