| Description | The "Perception of Language and Speech" international conference was fundamentally multidisciplinary and aimed to enrich the traditional linguistic disciplines with a fundamentally subjective perceptual component and an objective physiological component. My own lecture, which dealt precisely with the component of the perceptual meaning of messages influenced by the physiological processes activated by listening to music, as well as by the prism of the individual's subjective experience, was therefore part of the programme. Songs have accompanied man since his creation, both ontogenetically and phylogenetically. Interpreting songs is a complex hermeneutic feat, but their perception remains little studied. I am focusing on the possible interactions between musical meaning and the meaning conveyed by the lyrics, or the semantics of the song. I investigated the extent to which music and language draw on the same cognitive resources when listening to a song. I reviewed evidence suggesting that music influences semantic cognition through mental imagery and contextual cues that modulate the interpretation of textual information and create ad hoc concepts. |
