| Description | The lecture will focus on the phenomenon of conversions of public and sacred space in the 16th and 17th centuries related to the dramatic situation of religious conflicts in Central Europe. The Catholic and non-Catholic Church, its authorities and communities at this time entered into very intense disputes over the power to control the space of their activity, which had its specific forms inscribed in the form of works of art, as well as these interventions carried significant symbolic messages. Yet it is remarkable how this confrontational and symbolic language of religious identity continues to speak through artworks today. |
