Description Devotional depictions of Christ, Mary and the saints are an important part of Christian art and act as mediators between the saint and the believer, who turns to him in various ways, be it through prayer, votive gifts, or covering the image in rich clothing and jewelry. The wearing of images, especially Marian images, is a widespread phenomenon in Spanish-speaking countries. In this post, we will focus on the forms of this devotion, which became an art in itself and, together with another important phenomenon of religious processions, changed the form of Spanish sculpture. Using the example of the Virgin Mary of Candelaria, a Marian image from the island of Tenerife, and her counterpart, the Virgin Mary of Bučovice, we will describe the form of clothing and point out the tradition of clothing in our environment, or rather its absence. We will also mention the criticism of this tradition, which is directed against excessive material veneration and incorrect worship of saints, on the other hand, we will show how the aesthetic and artistic treatment of such images can have benefits for art and popular religiosity.
