Description Both the Global Definition of Social Work (2014) and the International Ethics Document (2018) emphasize the importance of respect for diversity as an important principle of social justice. At the same time, however, they draw attention to the fact that respect for diversity should not be a reason for violating human dignity, e.g. in the form of limiting the possibility to exercise human rights. When using the mediation method, the teaching of which is increasingly relevant due to the growing conflicts in society, it is important that both of these principles are applied in a balanced way. In this contribution, we ask the question: How can teaching the method of mediation and negotiation in social work contribute to the promotion of respect for diversity? Based on the analysis of the theoretical background of mediation approaches and the way of applying respect for diversity in these approaches as well as the reactions of the students and their own observation, the authors come to the conclusion that the teaching of mediation provides students with the opportunity to understand the application of this principle in the practice of social work not only in conflict resolution, but also in other contexts where they can use this transferable knowledge and skills.
