| Description | The presentation focuses on the two-hundred-year history of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, which is referred to as Russia's national cathedral. The political elites materialized their idea of "Russian national identity" in this building, and also through this building they tried to promote their narrative both among the local population and abroad. In this lecture, we look at the turning points in the history of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour – not as at expressions of a uniform and given "Russian national identity" – but as at moments in which it is possible (and necessary) to observe different currents of opinion in Russian society and to ask why and how certain currents prevailed. |
