Description Wild small mammals play an important role in maintaining and spreading of infectious agents in wild animals but also in captive animals. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of antibodies against Encephalitozoon cuniculi in the blood sera of animals from Czech zoos and monitor Encephalitozoon spp. in rodents trapped in zoo Brno. Antibodies to E. cuniculi were detected in sera of 8 zoo animals (3.3%) with a titer of 40 in 7 animals (3%) including 2 animals from the Bovidae family, 2 animals from the Canidae family and 3 animals from the Equidae family and a titer of 640 in the leopard. Encephalitozoon spp. was detected by PCR in 20% (22/108) of rodents trapped in zoo Brno with Yellow-necked Field Mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) the most infected animal.
