Description When confronted with art forms that embody cultural difference, aesthetic theory can undergo significant conceptual transformations. I examine these transformations by focusing on the aesthetics of Jean-Marie Schaeffer. More specifically, I focus on its relation to philosophy of art, its development in the light of recent advances in cognitive science and its interaction with the anthropology of art. I argue that the conceptual work of Schaeffer allows us to understand how we aesthetically activate art forms belonging to cultures remote from our own. I illustrate this by taking as a case study the spirit house, which can be found in several communities in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea.
