Description The paper deals with selected prose works of contemporary Czech writers who have won the Zlatá stuha literary prize for works for children and youth in the literary section category. Using the method of literary interpretation analysis, it identifies and characterizes the themes of the books and focuses on the characters of the heroes at different ages, from preschool age to adolescence. It explores what their interests and problems are, what developmental challenges they face and how they cope with them, how their personality characteristics and new skills develop, and how they build interpersonal relationships and seek and find their place in the world. This paper analyses four selected prose works: Jan Jirků's book of fairy tales Táta a princezna Rozárka (Daddy and Princess Rozárka) for preschool children aged four and up, and Miloš Kratochvíl's prose book Zajatci stříbrného slunce (Prisoners of the Silver Sun) for younger schoolchildren aged six and up, Petr Stančík's adventure story H2O a tajná vodní mise (H2O and the Secret Water Mission) for pre-pubescent readers between the ages of 10 and 12, and the last book analysed is František Tichý's novel Rekrut 244 (Recruit 244) for teenage readers aged thirteen and up. The paper is a part of a larger dissertation research and aims to investigate the psychological characteristics of protagonists at different stages of psychological development in selected texts of Czech children's literature writers, to describe and categorize developmental tasks and attitudes, qualities and values that are accentuated in these prose works and to compare them with the widely known ontogenetic theories - the theory of cognitive development, moral consciousness, above all to analyze the evidence of Erik Erikson's theory of psycho-social development.
