Description Are you worried about the indication for hair collection? You don't have to! This is a simple, non-invasive way to obtain an important sample that contains a lot of mutually correlated retrospective information along the entire length of the collected strand of hair. With proper manipulation and segmentation of the strand into smaller (approx. 1 cm) parts, the concentrations of endogenous and exogenous substances can be quickly determined to monitor their concentration levels. For example, with steroid hormones, episodic states can be retrospectively analyzed, therapy can be monitored in the long term and safe levels can be set for substitution treatment, or they can contribute to the confirmation of a number of diagnoses from the fields of psychiatry or endocrinology. The article will present simple instructions on how to proceed if a psychiatrist is interested in this type of determination, i.e. the entire pre-analytical phase including the collection itself, labeling, preservation and preparation for transport to the analytical laboratory. Depending on the length of the hair, the patient can be followed up for up to a year in the past and thus use the overlap with current values obtained from other biological matrices.
