Description The book summarizes the results of research to date in the field of vegetation ecology in the extremely species-rich meadows of the White Carpathians and their analogues around the world. From pioneering studies to modern research and the authors' latest, as yet unpublished results. However, it is not an encyclopedic overview of available botanical data. The main motive of the work is to find an answer to the provocative question of the uniqueness of the White Carpathians. Readers are thus introduced to the broad context of the diversity and development of nature in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the formation of scientific opinions on the relationship between forest and non-forest areas in this part of the world. Everything is framed by the concept of the Perikarpathian forest-steppe – a unique ecosystem characterized by a unique combination of natural conditions and a thousand-year history in which the fates of plants, animals, and people intertwine.
