| Description | This paper examines taboo topics in doctoral education from the perspectives of both supervisors and doctoral students and, based on qualitative interview analysis, identifies three interrelated taboos: (1) a contextual taboo of projecting excellence while operating in conditions of dependence and limited material incentives; (2) an admission-stage taboo of accepting candidates despite unspoken doubts about preparedness and motivation; and (3) a practice-level taboo in which feedback is softened, and support is differentially distributed. While motivation emerges as a sensitive issue for both parties, preparedness constitutes a taboo primarily on the supervisors’ side. Doctoral students also tend to reflect more on the variability of support and expectations than on its causes. The findings suggest that strengthening openness at the relationship level is unlikely to be sufficient without parallel structural changes. |
