| Description | In May 2025, small-flowered specimens of the American genus Amsinckia (Boraginaceae, tribe Cynoglosseae) were found in a street lawn in the town of Pardubice, eastern Bohemia, Czech Republic. Using the key in Volume 3 of Flora Europaea, the plants were identified as A. calycina, a species native to western South America. Following the record of A. lycopsoides in the city of Brno in 2000, this represents the second species of this American genus to be found in the Czech Republic. Based on this single record, A. calycina should be classified as a casual neophyte in the country’s flora. However, the morphological characters of the plants also correspond to those of the North American species A. menziesii, and the assignment to the South American species is therefore preliminary, in line with customary practice in neighbouring countries. Further research in the native range, including molecular methods, is needed to determine whether A. calycina and A. menziesii are distinct taxa or represent geographically separated populations of a single polymorphic species. In general, European records of A. calycina, A. menziesii, and A. micrantha should be re-examined, as the name A. micrantha has been included in the synonymy of A. menziesii, and previous identifications may have relied on sources reflecting earlier taxonomic concepts. |
