| Description | This article examines the sources of financial revenue used by Czech disinformation websites and the question of whether these websites comply with relevant legal regulation. The topic is based on existing research that identified financial revenue generated through online content as an important factor that motivates many actors to create and spread disinformation. This article focuses on the Czech context and Czech disinformation websites. Firstly, based on previous research, three relevant sources of financial revenue for disinformation websites are identified: online advertising, unlabeled advertising, and contributions from the public. Then, a legal analysis identifies relevant Czech and European regulations that apply to these sources of revenue. More specifically, the analysis includes the Advertising Regulation Act, the Digital Services Act (DSA), and legal provisions governing independent business operations. A content analysis, which follows the legal analysis and examines selected number of Czech disinformation websites, provides insights into the extent to which disinformation websites utilize the selected sources of revenue and whether they do so in accordance with the law. |
