Description Molecular diagnostics (detection of nucleic acids by molecular genetic techniques) becomes more and more valuable in clinical diagnosis of disease including the detection of pathogenic microbes, especially in cases where the classical cultivation is not possible or not reliable or not fast enough. As with every new approach, some tend to overestimate its value, while sceptics think it is of little value. In the work, on the basis of literature and our own data from more than 5-years experience, we have assessed the pros and cons of the use of molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases.
