Citation
Description This paper focuses on the analysis of discourses on childhood in Czech post-socialist society. On the basis of illustrations from the discursive analysis of interviews, e-discussions, and published expert texts, uncertainty and the reconstruction of hitherto dominant images of the socialist model of childhood in Czech public discourse as well as on the level of intimate biographical reflections are described. This reconstruction of childhood as a social category and an institution is a variation in the general process of change in the model of childhood as an institution of heavy modernity in a fluid and uncertain social category and as an institution in post-modern societal uncertainty, as reflected by western sociology from the 1970s and 1980s. This change in childhood is placed into the framework of wider social connections, and the conceptualisation of a new social model of post-modern childhood is presented.
