Description Overview of meteorological extremes in the Czech Republic based on papers published in the 1990s is presented. Data about extremes with regards to selection of appropriate characteristics, homogeneity and spatial variability of observations, as well as methods of their elaboration, are discussed. Fluctuations of annual temperatures and precipitation in instrumental period are shown. Presentation of meteorological extremes in the Czech Republic concentrates on extremely cold and warm months, heat waves, extreme daily precipitation totals, droughts, floods, strong winds and convective phenomena (thunderstorms, hailstorms). Different aspects of impacts of meteorological extremes are discussed with a special attention to hungry years 1770-1772 in the Czech Lands.
