Description The aim of present study is to illuminate historical background of narrative ideas in psychology, to describe specific periods of their development, and to analyse a different thematic and methodological versions of narrative psychology. The influence of linguistic, philosophical and literal criticism on emergence of narrative psychology is explored. Contribution of Sarbin's narrative root metaphor is appraised. It is argued that narrative psychology arose as a distinctive psychological approach, which could be called as a narrative turn or a silent revolution in the development of psychological ideas. Contributions of main narrative psychological approaches such as psychoanalytical, social-constructionism, and cognitive, are briefly discussed. Variety of thematic focuses - narrative identity, narrative memory, narrative psychotherapy, life-story, and narrative research - is also shortly explored. Response of Czech and Slovak psychologists is described as a slow and cautious acceptance. It is alleged that narrative psychology emerged as a response to crises in psychological methodology, and as a possible developmental alternative, which does not disclaim previous development of psychological ideas radically.
