Citation
Description Journalists as a specific socioprofessional community belong among the traditional topics of sociological and mediological surveys. Habits, professional standards, routines, as well as the opinions of press people can offer at least partial answers to questions dealing with the main characteristics of public and political communication. The attitudes of journalists towards their profession and the historical conditions of these attitudes have a privileged position in metamedia discourse. The article is based upon a survey of Czech journalists done between the years 2003 and 2004 and its aim is to sketch the basic shape of their professional self-projection. The results suggest that side by side with traditional professional values, which can be found in the literature (the educational, advocate/adversial and neutral types), there is a subgroup stressing a distinctive career-pragmatic approach to the role of the journalist. Journalism is understood as a tool of individual development, as a fast track towards an individual career (not only within the framework of the journalistic profession).
