Description American poet Sylvia Plath committed suicide in 1963 in the age of 30 after separating from her husband Ted Hughes. Using the computer model HAL (Hyperspace Analog to Language Model) we will interpret the semantic space of journals in which Sylvia Plath contemplates her life. The Hyperspace Analog to Language measures global co-occurance of words, and creates vectors based not only on word frequency, but also on a quantitative measure of interrelations and distances between the words in a text. This technique is able to objectively quantify the context in which the author writes about her suicidal ideation and depression, as well as positive emotions (such as happiness etc). This context can be interpreted further by comparing it with other biographical materials; conclusions and hypotheses derived from the qualitative analysis of the text will be examined.
