Description | The contribution was focused on the societal representations of desirable characteristics for woman and man in the Czech republic. The study revealed that the masculine and the femininine traits are attractive for both genders, though the feminininity is more expected in women and masculinity in men. The differences in the perception of gender standards were found between sexes and age groups. Women perceive societal standard of woman and man as more masculine. The younger generation perceive the societal standard of woman in more traditional way. One outcome of the study is relatively consistent scale of femininity (defined as communion) and masculinity (divided into the two separate dimensions - decisivness and leadership). Leadership seems to have the greatest distinctive power for the genders being much more desirable for men than for women. Results were interpreted in the light of social role theory (Eagly, 1987), role-incongruity theory (Eagly, 2002), concept of androgyny (Bem, 1974) and social dominance theory (Sidanius, Pratto, Bobbo, 1994). |
