Description One of the founding documents of twentieth-century cognitive science was Chomsky's review of Skinners's Verbal behavior. By any measure, Chomsky was a leading figure in the victory of cognitivism over behaviorism. Moreover, Chomsky's computational view of language processing was a major inspiration for functionalism, but Chomsky has vigorously chalenged several of the claims charactrestically made by functionalists. This paper contributes a contribution to the discussion concerning the debate betweeen functionalism and internalism in linguistics. The paper puts forward some consequences of empirical properties of natural language whichc strongly suggest that internalist conception is on the right track.
