Description The contribution is the outcome of the author's research activities within a two-year joint Czech-German project between Brno Masaryk University, Czech Republic and Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany, "Comparing and conceptualizing complexity and coherence in English texts and teaching". The author presents some results from her current research into different genres of spoken English, namely private face-to-face conversation, private telephone conversation and public radio discussions. While comparing their main characteristics, she attempts to contribute to the study of interactive discourse items and their role in the establishment of coherence in spoken English.
