Description The aim of this paper is to address the topic of employment position of people, who lived in financially depressed households in the Czech Republic in 2004. We use survey data of 2.500 respondents, who were social assistance claimants or who stated, they were in similar situation in the year 2004. We examine the employment status of these people, employment characteristics and employment quality of jobs, in which they worked or had worked before they became unemployed. We also focus on the impact of employment on the feelings of financial hardship and ability to make ends meet. We found that despite the fact that circa 50 percent of our respondents were employed, the financial hardship in their households was widespread, especially because there was usually only one employed person. Unfavorable situation of these people is also influenced by their marginal position in the labour market, which is characterized by low pay and overall low employment quality.
