| Description | Dealing with this problem forms part of our effort to categorize various ways of quoting, reproducing the speech of somebody else or ones own speech. We analyze prý as a neutral signal of quoting, but also prý as a modal particle signalling the speakers uncertainty, his doubts about the truthfulness of the quoted utterance. We are also interested in the way that prý takes part in textual transitions between direct and indirect speech. Data from the Czech National Corpus enable us to study combinations of prý with other modal particles (údajně, zřejmě), with the modal verb mít, with verba dicendi (řekl, že prý), and with various conjunctions (že prý, protože prý, jestli prý). From a stylistic point of view, we give attention to specific functions of prý in narratives and in press interviews. In addition to the corpus SYN2000, we use two Czech corpora of spoken language (Prague Spoken Corpus, Brno Spoken Corpus) as sources of data for colloquial prej (von prej, co bude k vobědu). |
