Description Science and technology parks (STPs) are important instrument for competitiveness growth and support of innovations. Science and technology park are sort of innovation centre. Innovation centres are institutions that contribute to successful development of innovation process it means that they arrange transfer of results of research into practice. Science and technology parks serve to small and medium-sized enterprises as well as to big firms. The enterprises so have better approach to new innovations and qualified experts. The article is divided into two parts. First of them assess the importance of STPs, it deals with contributions of these parks for regional development, for enterprises and for universities. For example STPs support favoured business environment, help to start new firms or help to create new jobs. Science and technology parks can be good way for development of new technologies, products and services. They can prevent outflow of qualified workforce from region too. This part of article is concentrate on various theoretical approaches to STPs. It also deals with functioning and activities of STPs. The second part is about science and technology parks in the Czech Republic. They have been founded since the early 90s in the Czech Republic. The article contains spatial analysis of STPs in NUTS regions in the CR and assessment of their contribution for economics of these territory units. Last not least the attention is paid also to special programmes financed from structural funds that support establishment of STPs. Impacts of these programmes are evaluated from the regional point of view.
