Description European railways have long history of operation. But presently they are faced with challenging problems. The success of road transport has diminished their market shares considerably. As a consequence revenues declined and European railways operations are usually unprofitable. This has led to growing dependency on public subsidies and to high indebtness of railway companies. European transport policy tries to revitalize railway transport through competition promotion and infrastructure financing. The aim of this paper is to assess economic possibilities and limits of European railway at the beginning of 21st century.
