Description Skeletal remains of about one thousand Brno inhabitants were examined during archeological research of a burial ground located in Malá Nová street in Brno. The analysis of pathological changes on skeletons also involved studying manifestations of infectious diseases that was supplemented with information obtained from available historical sources. Epidemiological situation in Brno of the 18th and 19th centuries that corresponded to a typical picture of a developing industrial town was evaluated. Risk factors for spreading infections were represented by polluted drinking water, concentration of large numbers of inhabitants, prostitution, trade activities, military conflicts. Great differences in the population immunity against infectious diseases existed between wealthy citizens and workmen living in socially unfavourable conditions. The study of skeletal remains has confirmed high incidence of tuberculosis and recorded a wide scale of osseous manifestations of syphilitic infection. Literary sources have supplemented the study with information about infectious diseases that left no traces on the skeleton.
