Description Although PCR detection of mycotic pathogens in clinical samples has been around for almost two decades using of this method for diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis is still controversial. Molecular methods are routinely used in various fields of modern microbiology, e. g. genotyping of bacterial strains resistant to antibiotics, molecular epidemiology or routine detection of some viruses. PCR methods made the diagnostics faster, accurate and more feasible. This review intends to show why molecular diagnostics of invasive mycotic infections is so tricky and highlight the main limiting factors.
