Description Noise is one of the most important environmental sources of inhabitants' annoyance. The level of annoyance is usually explained in relation to noise level and to the type of noise. Annoyance is also related to other properties of noise (such as number of noise events, frequency composition, relation between noise level and ambient level or accessibility of quiet rooms in a dwelling), is influenced by a series of non-acoustical variables (such as information content of the noise, visibility of the source, visual appearance of the environment and other situational factors) and also by changes of noise situation over time. These variables of physical nature represent a widely used tool for prediction of inhabitants' annoyance but they do not enable us to explain the considerable variability of annoyance given by psychological meaning of noise.
