Description The earliest record of Cirsium brachycephalum in the territory of the today's Cech Republic was published by Ch. F. Hochstetter in 1825. He reported that he had seen this species near the former Měnín Lake (containing saline water) south-east of Brno in southern Moravia. A search in the herbarium WU-Keck (University of Vienna) yielded a specimen collected there by Hochstetter between 1817 and 1824, confirming the formerl native occurrence of Cirsium brachycephalum in this site, situated at the northeastern edge of the species' range.
